Partial Transplantation
The advantages of partial transplantation:
- In partial transplant type, since the donor and the recipient are specified, unlike transplantation from the brain death, there is no need to register and being prioritized in the transplant waiting list.
- The date of the operation is largely predictable and under the control of the donor, patient and the transplantation team.
- Since there is no need to transfer the patient from other sites, the donated liver would stays less time out of the body.
The patient will be operated under appropriate conditions (not in an emergency). - Fortunately, this procedure has reduced the number of patients on the long waiting list.
Complications of partial transplantation:
Despite the significant benefits mentioned above, partial transplantation also has some complications for the organ donor. These complications depend on the type of operation. In general, the death rate for a donor is about 3 to 4 people per 1000 person.
The major complications of this transplant type are as follows:
- Bile leakage from the biliary system
- Infection
- Hernia of the operation area
- Blood clots in the veins of the feet
However, in most cases, the liver donor returns to life and daily activities after 10 weeks.
