Fatwa on Organ Transplantation in Islam
The religion of Islam attaches special value to the preservation of human life and accepts any action that is considered a cure and preservation of human life. On this account, the principle of individual satisfaction is an important point in Islam. It is also important to maintain the respect of the dead. Imam Khomeini (Leader of Islamic Revolution) in 1964, while having an interesting discussion, answered some of the basic objections to the transplant with a jurisprudential argument and considered the transplant operation as permissible from the Islamic point of view. On the other hand, Sunni scholars have an acceptable consensus in this regard. In 1982, the Association of Sunni Scholars issued a fatwa authorizing transplantation. Other fatwas have been issued in this regard. At the 1989 conference, some Islamic scholars, while respecting the human body and emphasizing that the human body (dead or alive) should not be harmed, noted that the use of the human body for God’s sake is permissible.
